Tacos El Franc Expands to San Diego; 'A Desert Between Two Seas' Wins Prestigious Award; Los Cabos Downtowns to Get Major Makeover

Tacos El Franc, a renowned Tijuana taqueria, has expanded into the San Diego area with two new locations. Meanwhile, Amy Muia's novel 'A Desert Between Two Seas' has won the prestigious Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction. In Los Cabos, a major makeover of downtown areas is set to begin.

The expansion of Tacos El Franc is the result of a 20-year effort by Roberto Kelly. The first U.S. location opened in National City's Westfield Plaza Bonita in June 2025, followed by the second in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter on October 8. Muia's novel, set against the backdrop of the Spanish missions on the Baja California peninsula, reflects her decade-plus of research and exploration at mission sites around the peninsula. The project in Los Cabos aims to renovate public squares, plazas, building facades, landscaping, sidewalks, and lighting. Funded by a 4% hotel tax through Fideicomiso de Turismo de Los Cabos (Fiturca), the makeover is expected to begin in late 2025 and be completed by early 2026, with Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo receiving a 120 million peso upgrade.

Tacos El Franc's U.S. expansion brings a taste of Tijuana to San Diego, while Amy Muia's award-winning novel offers a deep dive into the history of the Baja California peninsula. The Los Cabos makeover promises to transform the downtown areas, enhancing the visitor experience.
