Title: Doctor Strange Skips Avengers: Doomsday but Returns for Secret Wars: A Fresh Look

With the dust settled on Infinity War and Endgame, we've grown accustomed to the anticipation leading up to a new Avengers movie. It's like waiting for the next installment of the infamous "Everyone Is Here!" Super Smash Bros. Ultimate meme, but with superheroes instead. And Doomsday is no exception, reeling in iconic MCU characters, including some who were believed to have bid their farewells. But as of now, Doomsday has only followed the trend partially.

That predominantly stems from Benedict Cumberbatch, who recently disclosed to Variety that Doctor Strange will not be gracing us with his presence in Avengers: Doomsday next year. Pondering on whether this was a spoiler, Cumberbatch added with a laugh, "Fuck it!"

The original plan for Doctor Strange in the movie sustained during the Kang Dynasty phase. However, the radical overhaul in Marvel's schemes after actor Jonathan Majors' allegations of reckless assault in late 2023 disrupted the plan. Thankfully, fans of the Sorcerer Supreme can rest assured. Although Strange is skipping out on Doomsday, he is set to play a pivotal role in the sequel, Secret Wars. In fact, Cumberbatch declared that Strange is "quite central to where things might go."

This isn't the end of Strange's journey in the MCU, either. Cumberbatch hinted, "They are very open to discussing where we go next. 'Who do you want to write and direct the next one? What part of the comic lore do you want to explore so that Strange can keep evolving?' He's a very rich character to play. He's a complex, contradictory, troubled human who's got these extraordinary abilities, so there's potent stuff to mess about with."

Obviously, it's only natural for not every movie to have every hero in its lineup - after all, that would be impractical at this stage of the MCU's lifespan. But it's intriguing to observe how drastically Marvel's plans have been shaken up due to the exclusion of certain characters. As we inch closer to Doomsday's May 2026 release, we'll undoubtedly uncover more heroes who may need to step back this time.
