Troubles looming for New York: Hochul argues for increased TSA personnel before Real ID deadline

As the federal enforcement deadline for REAL IDs approaches, New York state is taking significant steps to ensure a smooth transition for domestic air travel.

Starting May 7, 2025, travelers will need to present a REAL ID, Enhanced ID, U.S. passport, or another federally accepted form of identification for domestic air travel. This change affects all airports across the nation, and New York is no exception.

Governor Kathy Hochul has emphasized the importance of planning ahead to avoid delays during the transition. To this end, she has requested additional Transportation Security Administration (TSA) staff at John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport. However, the search results do not provide the names of the additional personnel to be deployed for the transition period.

To check if your ID is already compliant, look for a star or flag symbol. If it's missing, an upgrade is needed. The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has expanded appointment availability, added Saturday hours, and launched online tools to help residents obtain a REAL ID.

Applicants must bring proof of residency and legal name when applying for a REAL ID at the DMV. It is important to note that there is no additional fee beyond the normal license renewal cost for obtaining a REAL ID.

Last year, JFK and LaGuardia airports handled over 96 million passengers combined, making it crucial that the transition to REAL IDs goes smoothly. Governor Hochul's request for additional TSA staff is a proactive measure aimed at ensuring this transition runs as smoothly as possible.

With the deadline fast approaching, it's essential for residents to plan ahead and secure their REAL IDs in time. By doing so, they can ensure a hassle-free travel experience and avoid potential delays at the airport.
