TUNACONS Leads Sustainable Fishing with AI and Collaboration
TUNACONS, a leading player in the Eastern Pacific tuna industry, has been making waves with its commitment to responsible fishing. Operating 58 purse seine tuna vessels, it catches over 130,000 tons of tuna annually while demonstrating that large-scale fishing can indeed be sustainable.
TUNACONS' success lies in its innovative approach to fisheries management. It uses artificial intelligence and data analytics to predict fishery dynamics, providing critical information to managers through dynamic dashboards processing over 471,000 data points. This tech-driven strategy, coupled with human skill, has led to thousands of live releases of bycatch species since 2018, including sharks, mobula rays, and sea turtles.
The organization's commitment to sustainability is evident in its collaboration with various organizations. It works with the Conservation Action Lab at UC Santa Cruz, Manta Trust, Monterey Bay Aquarium, and the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) to study and protect mobula rays and silky sharks. TUNACONS also meets and exceeds Marine Stewardship Council standards, demonstrating its dedication to responsible fishing.
Observers document every catch and bycatch event on TUNACONS vessels, providing data to the IATTC and national programs in Ecuador. The On-Board Observer Program for Class 6 vessels has reached 100 percent coverage, ensuring transparency and accountability in fishing operations.
TUNACONS' innovative use of technology, commitment to collaboration, and dedication to sustainability set a high standard for the fishing industry. By integrating human skill and technology with ecological responsibility, TUNACONS proves that responsible fishing on a large scale is not just possible, but achievable.
