Upcoming Film Break: Bakugan Set to Captivate Young Audiences as Latest Toy Sensation
Got a soft spot for those Bakugan toys? Well, buckle up, 'cause they're making the leap to the silver screen!
By Deadline, the geniuses at Spin Master Entertainment have roped in Atlas' Brad Peyton to steer this thrilling project as director, writer, and producer. In true Peyton style, he declared, "Bakugan's time has come for the big screen! I'm stoked to be the one to introduce this epic world to audiences worldwide. With Lindsay Harbert and the scrappy Spin Master team by my side, we aim to craft a blockbuster sensation that does justice to the awesome Bakugan universe. I'm convinced that this is going to be an unmissable cinematic event!"
Now, if you're clueless about Bakugan, picture Beyblade—only instead of spinning tops, you have spring-loaded spheres that transform into mini-figures when plunked onto their metal Gate cards. The toys hit the market in 2006, quickly followed by an anime series in 2007. The show focused on little Dan and his pals, who played the in-universe Bakugan game as a team called the Battle Brawlers. The series rolled out, seeing the Brawlers discover that their toy monsters were actually real and embarked on a mission to save their dimension from various threats, including intergalactic adversaries and rogue Bakugan. It all played out on Cartoon Network in the US and other territories, where it gained traction thanks to its catchy theme tune and Cartoon Network's general love for action and anime at the time.
The franchise has experienced two revivals thus far. The first, Bakugan: Battle Planet, aired on Cartoon Network for two seasons, then hopped over to Netflix for the final stretch. Just months after the show's end in 2023, a new series (simply called Bakugan) debuted on Netflix. There's currently no news on whether this series will get a second season or if Spin Master will reboot it again to tie into the movie.
