Limoges, a city in south-west France, is not just renowned for its world-class porcelain but also for its exceptional gastronomy. Food critic and restaurateur Martin Williams recently took a city break to explore the culinary delights of Limoges.

One of the highlights of his journey was dining at the Michelin-starred restaurant, Etoile Dordogne. Known for its Surprise Menu, Etoile Dordogne showcases French gastronomy at its finest. The world's best tomato salad, featuring perfectly poached lobster, green tomato sorbet, and clear tomato concasse, was a standout dish. A Burgundian gem, Pernand-Vergelesses, particularly the 1er Cru Domaine Rapet 2022, was another highlight.

Another gem in Limoges is the gastro-hotel, La Chapelle Saint Martin, run by chef Gilles and his wife Aude Dudognon. The hotel boasts three restaurants, including the Michelin-starred Jardin Extraordinaire, which offers simple but delicious dishes such as paté en croute, smoked trout, and beef bourguignon.

The Restaurant Gastronomique at Hotel Le Vieux Logis, run by maîtres d' Yves and his assistant who resemble Robert De Niro and a young Ryan Gosling respectively, is another must-visit. Amuse-bouches stimulate every tastebud, with dishes such as a leek-and-potato vichyssoise, duck confit bonbon, and battered whiting. Chef Vincent Arnould, a Meilleur Ouvrier de France and Michelin-starred since 2005, delivers cuisine of remarkable precision and heart.

Le Vieux Logis, a 25-bedroom hotel in the village of Trémolat, is less than a 30-minute drive from Bergerac Airport and Monbazillac. The city of Limoges is famous for its AOP-protected cattle, veal, lamb, and an AOP-status apple.

Limoges is also home to La Table du Couvent, a 12th-century canteen in the heart of the city, where the menu features Limousin beef, veal, and lamb.

Lastly, Château de la Trayne, a 14th-century castle expanded in the 17th century, offers a unique dining experience. The castle, located further from an airport, features a modern pool, lush gardens, immaculate interiors, and a gastronomic restaurant that focuses on regional cuisine with flair.

Whether you're a food enthusiast or simply looking for a memorable dining experience, Limoges promises to delight your palate with its rich culinary offerings.
